Busier than ever, 87-year-old Dr. Arnold Sheinis has painted the joys, heartaches and uncertainties of his long life in brilliant, brooding canvases on display at The Center for Arts in Natick.

The retired psychiatrist from Natick is exhibiting 40 paintings that range from the 1950s to last year, revealing the progression from a young artist infatuated with the dance of light through years of experimentation to an elderly widower’s exploration of his own memories.

In several striking works finished in 2014, Sheinis painted varied subjects in his distinctive style that often portrays archetypal figures – prophets and partygoers, philosophers and folks at an African market – in rich colors applied so lavishly they seem to smolder from within.
